BANGALORE: A group of 20 students ransacked a restaurant on Church Street and assaulted a waiter on Sunday in retaliation for his “misconduct” on Saturday. According to eye-witnesses, the students wielding hockey sticks barged into Hotel Empire around 7.30 p.m. While some of them went upstairs, the others went to the kitchen in search of the waiter. Those who went upstairs smashed window panes, tables and a wash basin. Those in the kitchen dragged the waiter out and assaulted him. All this happened in five minutes and soon the students walked towards M.G. Road. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) B.N.S. Reddy said the police suspected the involvement of a few students who had come for dinner on Saturday. They had allegedly created a ruckus following which the waiter had sent them out. The same students might have come along with a few others on Sunday. The hotel management had filed a complaint with the Cubbon Park police, he said. The police said that the closed circuit television cameras in the hotel had recorded the incident. The police ruled out the involvement of habitual offenders. It is for the second time in the recent past that this hotel, which is a favourite night hangout, has been targeted by unruly elements. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Gowda and two friends were injured in a brawl in October last. The windowpanes of the restaurant were broken and a chicken roaster and other equipment damaged in the melee. Mr. Nikhil and his friends allegedly had arguments with the hotel staff following refusal to serve food. Two complaints were filed with the Cubbon Park police. Three held
The South Division police arrested three persons allegedly involved in cases of snatching of gold chains and recovered eight gold “mangalsutras” and a motorcycle used by them. According to the police, C. Shankar (30), K. Harish (22) and D. Shankar (27) were involved in seven cases of chain-snatching reported from Banashankari, Channammana Kere Achchukat, Girinagar and Jayanagar police station limits. The accused were from Chittoor and Puttur of Andhra Pradesh, the police said.
