About 13 lakh students are part of the NCC across the nation. One lakh candidates are from Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI: It turned out to be a memorable day for the National Cadet Corps (NCC) of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College as several former cadets and NCC officers shared their experience at the golden jubilee of the college’s NCC unit, ‘Viveka NCC’ recently. Former associate NCC officers and cadets highlighted the qualities of discipline and leadership that were integrated in the training. While the officers underlined the need of NCC in colleges to provide mental and physical strength for students to face challenges, former cadets said the NCC training, which taught them time management and punctuality, had helped a great deal in their lives. Deputy Director General, NCC Directorate, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Andaman and Nicobar, Commodore U.N. Chitnavis, commended the efforts of the college, that has taken its NCC unit forward to golden jubilee celebrations. It is special considering that the NCC directorate is set to commemorate its diamond jubilee year in 2008. When the directorate was established in 1948, it was only looked at as a feeder to army forces. Now, character-building of the cadets formed an important part of the NCC training, he said. About 13 lakh students were part of the NCC across the nation, of which one lakh were from Tamil Nadu, Commodore Chitnavis said. Pointing out that there was tremendous potential in the students, he said it had to be properly channelised for the nation’s welfare. Commodore Chitnavis later distributed prizes to toppers of various NCC contests and gave away mementoes to former NCC officers. In his report, the college’s company commander S. Krishnan said it was perhaps the only college in the city with a NCC band. The NCC unit has produced two All India best cadets so far. The college also offered an obstacle course to train cadets in managing tough tasks. Principal in-charge G. Sreenivas Prabhu said it was a significant occasion for the college, as the golden jubilee of the NCC unit and the diamond jubilee of the founding of college were celebrated simultaneously. College secretary Atmaghananada participated.
