KARAIKAL: The Puducherry Government is according priority for the protection of fishermen families and implementing schemes for their welfare, Lt. Governor Mukut Mithi said on Saturday. Earlier, he handed over 224 permanent houses to tsunami-hit families. The houses were built by the Puducherry Multipurpose Social Service Society at Pattinacherry, near here, at a total cost of about Rs.4.50 crore. Mr. Mukut Mithi said the Government had decided to provide free houses to 3,900 tsunami-hit families in Puducherry and 6,100 families in Karaikal district. The houses were being constructed and handed over to beneficiaries in a phased manner. A 22-km shore protection wall was under construction in Karaikal district. River banks and the seashore were being strengthened. A modern fishing harbour was also being set up. Karaikal MLA and Leader of the Opposition in the Puducherry Assembly A.M.H. Nazeem spoke.
