TIRUCHI: The Puducherry Government has sought the assistance of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for the expansion of the airport in Puducherry. The expansion project needed about 80 acres falling in Kottakuppam village in the adjoining Tamil Nadu, Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said. Speaking at a function to mark the inauguration of the ‘Kidney Park’ hospital here on Friday, he said the land was required for the expansion of runway. He had already apprised Mr. Karunanidhi of the proposal for the expansion of the airport and urged the State Transport Minister K.N. Nehru who was also present, to pursue the matter with Mr. Karunanidhi. Mr. Rangasamy said that a government medical college, with an intake of 150 students, would be started in Puducherry next year. It would also have a 75-bed hospital. The Union territory accounted for only private medical colleges producing 311 doctors every year. An engineering college, with four undergraduate courses, would be started in Karaikal this year. An airport would be set up in Karaikal for which 750 acres had been acquired. Pointing out that the number of exclusive hospitals for curing kidney ailments was far less, he hoped that the ‘Kidney Park’ hospital in the city would cater to the health care needs of a large number of patients. The medical tourism to Chennai was on the increase in the light of the quality treatment, he said, hoping that the trend would extend to Tiruchi too.
