Detailed enumeration of cattle population from September 15

K. Raju

To be done as part of 18th national livestock census

DINDIGUL: The Department of Animal Husbandry will enumerate livestock population in the district from September 15 as part of the 18th national livestock census to chalk out future plans and design development schemes. The enumeration work will continue for a month ending on October 14, according to Department officials here on Saturday.

Thousands of farming communities in 308 panchayats and 24 town panchayats will be visited during this period to collect detailed information on number of domestic animals, including cows, buffaloes, sheep, goat and pigs and broiler and country chicken, their livestock production practice and farm equipment. Qualified unemployed men and women in rural areas will visit each house in all the villages and interact with farmers and cattle owners and record their live stock and their method of production and maintenance.

The census is essential for planning rehabilitation and development of livestock business that ensures additional income to farmers. This will also help planners target veterinary services and design disease control measures and campaign programmes against infectious diseases affecting cow, goat and chicken. They will also plan to introduce high breed varieties to enhance milk and meat production and assess production cost of milk and egg.

“We have planned to cover all villages in the district for right assessment and get exact figures. Enough publicity will also be given to inform farmers about the survey,” they added.

Special arrangements have been made to cover inaccessible village on hilly regions.

They appealed to farmers to give all necessary details to enumerators without any fear. The report will be submitted to the Government for further action. The last census was conducted in 2002.
