Temple watchman murdered, idols stolen

TIRUVARUR: Seven panchaloka and bronze idols were stolen from Sri Kozhundeeswarar Temple at Kottur near Mannargudi by some unidentified miscreants after murdering the watchman in the early hours of Sunday. The body of the watchman, Shankar, (50), an ex-serviceman, was found in front of the sanctum sanctorum. Chandran, the archakar, who spotted the body of Shankar and found the idols missing on Sunday morning, informed the police. Idols of two Natarajas, as many Sivagamis, Chandrasekar, Manickavinayagar and Sugreeswarar were missing.

According to the Deputy Inspector-General of police, Thanjavur range, Abash Kumar, one idol was later found a km away from the temple. He said that the police had got some clues and the culprits would be arrested soon.

The incident sent shock waves in the surrounding villages and a large number of people gathered at the temple. The Kottur police have registered a case.
