Staff Reporter

MADURAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has agreed to unveil the statues of the Marudu brothers at a function to be organised here on October 27, Pon. Muthuramalingam, president, Maruthupandiyar statue committee, said here on Sunday.

“Representations will also be made to the Chief Minister to extend financial assistance for the heirs of the freedom fighters,” he told reporters.

Martyr’s park sought

He said he would also seek a martyr’s park at Tirupattur, where 500 fighters were hanged by the British. “The park should be modelled on the lines of the Jallianwallah Bagh memorial.”

Chair planned

Mr. Muthuramalingam said: “We also plan to set up a chair at Madurai Kamaraj University with a fund of Rs. 20 lakh to carry out research on freedom fighters from the south.”
