PATNA: AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh has denied that the public contact programmes of the party, drawn up now, were aimed at preparing for mid-term elections to the Lok Sabha. Talking to reporters, Mr. Singh, along with party treasurer Motilal Vohra, ruled out the possibility of a mid-term election stressing that the mandate was for a five-year term and that the UPA government intended to fulfil that commitment. Mr. Singh, however, said that his party was prepared for an election anytime if the Left parties intended to force the issue on the nuclear deal with the United States. He maintained that the agreement was in the national interest and to increase generation capacity in the power sector. He also denied the charges of the Left parties that the UPA had not fulfilled its promises under the Common Minimum Programme and said that the Union government had been following the agenda and meeting the people’s aspirations. The Congress has decided to galvanise its party and launch a public contact programme from October 2. It intends to hold at least two public meetings in each Assembly constituency and these would be attended by the Central ministers. Asked about a tie-up with the RJD in the elections, Mr. Singh said that the two parties had entered into an agreement to work together during the last elections and that the same held good for now. However, in case of elections we would take a decision afresh, he said.
