Facile win for MEG

BANGALORE: MEG snuffed out the challenge of ASC 4-0 in a Super division football league match here on Sunday.

MEG forged ahead through a freakish goal. A Shiyad throw-in deflected into goal off ASC’s Gopal Saha in the fifth minute.

If this did not upset ASC, the next goal, a well executed free kick by Dipan Thapa in the 15th minute, surely did.

And six minutes later, a passing bout between Dipan Thapa and Lokeshwar culminated in the later pulling the ball back for Nigalraj to shoot home from near.

Down 0-3, ASC was back pedalling for most of the remaining period of the first session.

In the second though, the ASC boys did combine better and tested the MEG defence with sporadic raids, but the moves were nipped well before they could assume dangerous propositions.

Substitute Gabrial rounded off the tally for the Sappers in the 85th minute when he outsprinted the defenders and punted the ball into the net past an onrushing M.V. Rajesh under the ASC bar.

MEG has seven points from three matches, while ASC has lost both its encounters thus far.

In the ‘A’ division match, BHEL (EPD) downed Government Press by an odd goal in three.

All three goals came towards the fag end of the match.

Karthik put BHEL ahead in the 81st minute and three minutes later, Dakshinamurthy put the issue beyond doubt. Vijay Babu pulled one back in injury time.

MEG pips Fortis

Madras Engineering Group edged past Fortis 2-1 in the Synergy Sports Super Division league hockey tournament here on Sunday.

Fortis’ Damandeep put his side ahead in the 21st minute but after the break the Madras Sappers fought back to tilt the scales and win the game. Anil Minj (40th) and P Rajesh (44th) were the heroes for MEG.

In an earlier match Army Service Corps pipped Central Excise 4-3.

K.P Deepu (7th, 28th & 46th) logged a treble and Sanjay Tete (13th) broke Deepu’s run of goals. P.A Aiyyap converted two penalty strokes (3rd and 50th) and P.M Mandanna (10th) also scored for Central Excise.
