Sahitya sammelan on October 25

Udupi: The President of Udupi District Kannada Sahitya Parishat, U.C. Holla, said on Sunday that the 74th All India Kannada Sahitya sammelan would be held at the Aroor Lakshminarayana Rao Ground in Udupi from October 25 to 28, as was decided earlier.

Speaking at the meeting of the reception committee for the sammelan here, Mr. Holla said that the senior litterateur Vyasaraya Ballal had rejected the offer to inaugurate the sammelan. Hence, he had suggested the Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, D. Veerendra Heggade, at a meeting of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat. Some others at the meeting had suggested the name of the litterateur G. Narayana, but the issue was yet to be resolved. The person chosen would be announced on September 13, he said. He added that 30 minutes would be spent on discussing the issue of Kasaragod and Mahajan Report at the Sammelan.

The suggestion to honour those who have fought for Kannada in Kasaragod would be considered. Efforts would be made to postpone examinations for First Grade colleges under Mangalore University to November 2, Mr. Holla said.

MLA K. Raghupati Bhat said that Rs. 1 crore had been allotted in the present budget for the sammelan by Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa.

Of the amount, Rs. 25 lakh would be released. Roads would be repaired in the city and repair works of the National Highway 17, would be done after the rains. Funds for the repair of the highway had also been released by the Government, he said.
