Thunderstorm in Gulbarga

GULBARGA: A 40-year-old woman died after being struck by lightning in Gulbarga district.

Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning has affected normal life for the past 24 hours in the district.

According to reports reaching the district headquarters, the district experienced heavy rain in the morning. Jagdevi Rajasekhar Halkai, who was working in her agriculture field at Konahipparga village in Jewargi taluk, was killed on the spot when lightning struck her.

Elsewhere in the district, the heavy downpour affected normal life and in Gulbarga city many low-lying areas and a majority of public gardens were under water due to flooding of drains.

Gulbarga city and other parts of the district experienced heavy rainfall in the morning bringing normal life to a halt for more than two hours. Most of the localities in Gulbarga city went without power from 7 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. due to the thunderstorm.

Ganga Nagar area in the city was one of the most affected with the area consisting of more than 300 houses presenting a picture of an island.

The floodwaters also entered at least 50 houses.

However, there was no loss of life or property in the city.

The rainfall data available till 8 a.m. on Monday is: Jewargi taluk recorded the highest rainfall of 45.7 mm, followed by Shahapur with 36 mm, Gulbarga 26.8 mm, Afsalpur 21.7 mm, Yadgir 21,6 mm, Surpur 18.6 mm, Aland and Sedam 18 mm each, Chincholi 15.4 mm and Chitapur 14 mm.
