Corrections and clarifications

In an article “Many firsts to her credit”, a profile of Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddi (The Hindu-Magazine September 9, 2007, page 5), the photograph captioned “Tough Act: Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddi& #8221; is that of Sarojini Varadappan.

Indra Sinha, who is one of the six writers shortlisted for the Man Booker prize, was incorrectly referred to as Ms. Sinha, in a report “Indian, Pakistani in Booker race” (“International” page, Septemb er 8, 2007). Indra Sinha is a man. He is a full time writer, living in France with his family.

A sentence in a report “Karat’s poser to Manmohan” (Andhra Pradesh edition – Chennai, September 8, 2007, page 8) was: “He [CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat] was addressing a massive public meeting here [Bhimavaram] while leading a ‘jatha’ from Chennai to Visakhapatnam in protest against the alleged unilateral decision of the Manmohan Singh Government to take part in the joint naval exercises in the Bay of Bengal along with the United States, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia. It was an error. The countries that took part in the exercises were the U.S, Japan, Singapore and Australia.

The fourth paragraph in a report “Pakistan may use U.S. arms against India, says Pranab” (September 7, 2007) was: “Quoting the study conducted by a Washington-based think tank, Mr. Mukherjee said that of the $10-billion assistance provided by the U.S. to Pakistan over the past five-plus years, roughly 18 per cent or $1.8 billions had gone towards security assistance. This assistance was often justified as playing a critical role in the war with Pakistan bu t India did not subscribe to this view, he said.” It should have read as “… playing a critical role in Pakistan’s war against terrorism ….”

Ana Ivanovic was seeded fifth at the U.S. Open as mentioned in the text of a report “Williams sisters on track for a family reunion” (“Sport”, September 4, 2007), and not fourth as given in the results column.

An AFP report “Bosman out of Twenty20” (“Sport”, September 5, 2007) said that batsman Loots Bosman is a left-hander. He is a right-hander.
