Sourastra College registers win

Madurai: Solai Arasu’s goal helped defending champion Sourastra College defeat American College 1-0 in the four-team league of the Madurai Kamaraj University championship hockey tournament here on Monday.

In another match, Arul Anandar College (Karumathur) beat Raju’s College (Rajapalayam) 4-2. Remi, Don Basco, Philamin Arputhan and Jeyaraj scored for Arul Anandar College, while Mayakanan and Muthukumar reduced the margin.

Gold for Karthick

A.R. Karthick of Veera Hanuman Gym won the gold in the boys’ 44kg category in the Madurai district junior weightlifting competitions for the S. Varadarajan memorial Trophy on Sunday.

VOC retains title

At Tuticorin, VOC College (Tuticorin) retained the title defeating Scott Christian College (Nagercoil) by 31 runs in the final of the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University inter-collegiate cricket tournament on Monday.

The scores: Final: VOC 89 in 26 overs bt Scott CC 58 in 25.4 overs (Rajesh three for 17, Vinothan three for 15). Third place: Nesamani (Marthandom) 110 in 30 overs lost to ST Hindu (Nagercoil) 111 for four in 25.4 ov ers. Semifinals: VOC 148 for six in 30 overs bt Nesamani 58 in 21 overs. ST Hindu 58 in 22 overs lost to Scott CC 59 for four in 17 overs.
Annamalai wins

At Karaikudi, Annamalai Polytechnic College regained the title after a gap of two years, defeating VSVN Polytechnic College (Virudhunagar) 6-1 in the final of the Madurai Division inter-polytechnic college football tournament on Sunday.
