Official inspects work on Nalknad palace

Staff Correspondent

Quality of renovation work found to be poor

Nalknad palace was built by Dodda Veerarajendra

It is a two-storeyed building with a tiled roof

Madikeri: Kodagu Deputy Commissioner K.R. Niranjan has said that renovation work on the Nalknad Palace at Yavakapadi village in Madikeri taluk, entrusted to INTACH (Indian National Trust For Art and Cultural Heritage), is of poor quality and would be brought to the notice of senior officials.

Inspection

Mr. Niranjan inspected renovation work along with other officials on Sunday, an official press release said here on Monday.

The palace, a two-storeyed building with a tiled roof, does not match the elegance of palaces elsewhere.

It was built by Dodda Veerarajendra, ruler of Kodagu, between 1792 and 1794 A.D.

Protected monument

Once an inaccessible mountain fortress, it is a protected monument under the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Karnataka.

The palace is said to have served as the last refuge for Chikka Veerarajendra, the last ruler of Kodagu, before his surrender to the British in 1834.

Mr. Niranjan later visited a home-stay facility nearby and checked the records.

He asked the operator to register the facility with the Department of Tourism.

Mr. Niranjan also visited a few coffee plantations at Napoklu and surrounding areas and assessed the damage caused by the recent heavy rainfall.

Assistant Commissioner Akram Pasha, Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies Manteswamy, and District Information Officer Vinodchandra were present.
