Success mantra

Professionalism is the watchword in corporate functioning. A zest for work and zeal to serve others broadly define the success of an individual. This, and even more, is what is expected of those working for the Emergency Management and Research Centre (EMRI), which runs the popular ‘108’ ambulances.

But for these traits displayed by the technicians at the EMRI, the immense popularity of ‘108’ service would have been incomplete. Yes, to display such a commitment to serve others, one should have a good heart. “If you have these qualities, there will be a lot of satisfaction. It is what working at the EMRI will promise to one and all,” these inspiring words at the venue began the day for students appearing for a test for admission into the EMRI’s PG programme in emergency care.

Media savvy

Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries Mandali Buddha Prasad is known to be a media savvy politician. He can greet most of the reporters by name. He seemed pleasantly surprised when he found a new name on one of the half-a-dozen mikes put in front of him at a press conference he addressed recently.

When he read out the name of the new channel and wondered why he hadn’t seen it on television, the reporter concerned explained that it was a news portal. When he enquired about another channel, the reporter said it was a TV channel but one on trial. Mr. Prasad was sharp enough to notice that the mike of a channel that very recently went on air was not on the table. The Minister said: “I’m holding this press conference primarily to meet friends in the media. It has been a while since we got together.”

Glitter and glamour

The launch of a collection of antique jewellery by the Kirtilals in their city showroom saw many lensmen virtually going on their knees. Delighted at the sight of the three models who strutted around displaying the jewellery, the photographers went on a clicking spree.

Some bowed, others turned, twisted and virtually went on their knees to capture the ravishing girls who merrily posed for the cameras. Going by the attendance of the unusually high number of media persons at the launch, it was difficult to say if they were drawn by the glitter of the gold or the glamour of the girls!

Chikungunya threat

He was an immunologist of long standing, having spent close to three decades researching on a number of infectious and contagious diseases. But when it came to visiting his home State, Madhavan P.N. Nair, professor and chair of immunology and associate dean of bio-medical research at the college of medicine of Florida International University in the US, was not willing to take any risk.

Prof. Nair, who hails from Kerala and who never misses an opportunity to pay a visit to Guruvayur, was in two minds about visiting his home State this time. The reason: the chikungunya that is rocking Kerala.
