CHENNAI: The nerve-racking period of placements is usually the only point of interaction between information technology students and the industry. The Confederation of Indian Industry is now offering IT students in south India a different platform to showcase their computing skills in front of industry experts at iTalent 2007. “We want to give students exposure to best-in-class competitive landscapes. It will also give the industry an opportunity to have a look at the best of students from institutions, especially from semi-urban areas, who may not get such a chance otherwise,” said Ravi Shah, chairman of iTalent 2007 and vice-president at Tata Consultancy Services. The event, which is in its fourth year, is woven around a team-based, project-centric competition. This year, 75 institutions from the southern States are expected to send around 225 teams. The teams, each made up of two or three final-year students (from IT-related BE, M.Sc or MCA courses), are expected to send in proposals for IT-related projects for industry applications by September 20. Over the next three months, they will work on their projects and produce a project report by December 20. The best of these will be invited to present their projects to a panel of judges from the industry during the final event scheduled for February 2008 in Chennai. At stake are cash prizes — with the winning team picking up Rs.75, 000 — citations and trophies, and what will be as important to the students, the chance to be noticed by some of the large IT firms involved in the event. Last year, five top firms issued 543 letters of intent to contestants for placement opportunities. This year’s steering committee has 12 companies, including TCS, Infosys, Satyam, Wipro and Cognizant.
