MANGALORE: Salvage experts from SMIT, a Singapore-based company, continued to pump out rainwater from the merchant vessel Cheng Le Men stranded off Tannirbhavi coast here on the second day of rescue operation on Monday. Another six experts have joined the international rescue team. Thus, 14 experts are now involved in the operation, according to Mohan Kudari, Port Officer, Old Mangalore Port. Another tug from Mumbai is likely to arrive here shortly to assist in the operation. After pumping out water they will shift some quantity of cargo inside the ship from one side to another to balance the vessel. The ship was steady, Mr. Kudari said. According to Commander M.V. Baadkar, Commandant, Karnataka Coast Guard, a helicopter had been kept as standby at Bajpe (Mangalore) airport for use in case of emergency. The ship authorities were confident that they would be able to move out in a week. The tilt of the ship had remained more or less the same. There was no considerable improvement in it, he said.
