Fake currency seized

BANGALORE: The Anti-Terrorist Squad of the Central Crime Branch has arrested two persons, said to be the kingpins of an inter-State fake currency racket, and seized from them fake currency notes of Rs. 500 denomination worth Rs. 36,000.

Commissioner of Police Neelam Achuta Rao told presspersons here on Monday that they had also seized computers, colour photocopying machines and screen printing equipment.

The arrested were identified as Shyam George (37) of Kammanahalli and Sreenivas alias Dhanush (35) of Kothnur.

The two were accused in similar cases in Byappanahalli, Jeevanbimanagar, Ashoknagar, Fraser Town and Nandini Layout police stations, the Commissioner said.

The police were on the lookout for Shyam since February last after his two accomplices, Dorai Raju of Byrasandra and Babu of Fraser Town, were caught possessing fake currency notes of Rs. 500 denomination worth Rs. 8 lakh, Mr. Rao said.

Rajan of Kerala, the alleged mastermind of the racket, is now in the Hindupur prison in Ananthapur district of Andhra Pradesh. Rajan and Tailor Ravi of Sunkadakatte in Bangalore were printing the fake currency notes here, Mr. Rao said.

Mr. Achuta Rao said that in the wake of huge quantities of fake currency notes seized from terrorist suspects in other metros recently, the Bangalore police had stepped up vigil on such activities here.Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Gopal B. Hosur said that the police were in touch with Mumbai and New Delhi police in connection with fake currency rackets.
