PUDUCHERRY: Part-time workers of the Education Department and Directorate of School Education working as meal carriers, cooks, assistants and watchmen in the Noon Meal Scheme staged a dharna on Monday demanding that the Government regularise them. The workers, who gathered under the banner of the Future Government Staff Federation, staged the protest near the Directorate of School Education. Radha, president of the federation, said there were a total of 146 workers, who had been selected through the Employment Exchange and had worked in these posts for more than 4 years now. The workers had crossed 37 years and were working for very low wages and would not be able to find any alternative employment elsewhere, he added. “They cook and supply food to schoolchildren and they have been doing a very good job. We don’t want to break that system and so have chosen to stage dharnas that will not affect the food supply. We have already taken up the matter with the Chief Minister and the Minister concerned. Despite their assurance that the workers will be regularised, the Government is yet to take steps in that direction,” Mr Radha said.
