New ration cards in 3 months

One more chance for cardholders to take photograph

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: New ration cards will be issued in three months, Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran has said.

Replying to questions in the Assembly on Tuesday, Mr. Divakaran said those who could not make use of the opportunity to take photographs for new cards would be given one more chance.

Following raids, the licence of 28 wholesale ration distributors were suspended and of 38 retail shops cancelled.

Electronic weighing machines will be introduced in ration shops. The functioning of food advisory councils will be extended to grama panchayats.

On receiving complaints about the distribution of LPG cylinders, 19,097 raids were conducted and 4,491 cylinders seized. Officials of oil companies have agreed to streamline the distribution of LPG cylinders. A State-level monitoring committee headed by the Minister has been formed to look into complaints about the distribution of domestic LPG cylinders, he said.

The Government will consider the proposal to open Annapoorna Hotels, he said.

Investors’ meet

Industries Minister Elamaram Karim said that Special Economic Zones would be set up only on the basis of requirement. The Government is planning to organise investors’ meets in all districts.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said the Government had given up the proposal to set up liaison office-cum-guesthouses of South Indian States in Kerala. The new guesthouse of the State in Mumbai will start functioning soon. Mr. Achuthanandan said he had expressed his willingness to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to review the Parambikulam-Aliyar agreement.

There is no proposal to raise the retirement age of government employees. The Government is planning to pilot legislation for the welfare of Non-Resident Indians, he said.
