This Day That Age
The Lok Sabha on September 10 approved the rules made under the Representation of the People Act which, among other things, authorise the Chief Election Commissioner to introduce the marking system of voting in future elections. Replying to the debate, the Law Minister, Mr. A.K. Sen, said the rules had been framed only after ascertaining the opinion of the recognised political parties at a conference convened by the Election Commission in September last year. The Election Commission proposed to try the marking system in selected rural and urban areas in by-elections. On the basis of experience gained, it should be possible to determine ultimately whether the system could be adopted in the general elections.
