Unfortunate

This refers to the report that Parliament has been adjourned sine die four days ahead of the scheduled end of the monsoon session. Our MPs’ act of holding the proceedings to ransom in the name of political strategy is not a ha ppy augury for parliamentary democracy. Instead of using the session to iron out their differences, the representatives, lacking both in expression and conviction, have preferred to keep the contentious issues intact for a future date.

The people elect their representatives to the Lok Sabha in the hope that they will act in the interest of the nation. But it has become a regular practice for our members to stall the proceedings of the house. Business is not transacted for days together.

We live in a democracy and as such it is impossible to arrive at a consensus on all issues at all times. Both the ruling party and the opposition should adopt a policy of give-and-take on vital issues. Holding the house to ransom and not heeding the advice of the Presiding Officer do not serve the purpose for which they were elected.

L.R. Moorthy,
Thane
