Corrections and clarifications

A reader said that the photograph in the page 1 promo “Solar plane’s record” (Early editions, September 11, 2007) was not that of the solar plane. The story, which was a detailed graphic used in the “International” page, was on the “Zephyr UAV smashing the flight duration record”. The reader is right. The promo picture was that of an MQ-9 Reaper. The Reaper is the U.S. Air Force’s first “hunter-killer” unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), designed to engage targets on the battlefield as well as provide intelligence and surveillance. The jet-fighter sized Reaper can fly up to 14 hours fully loaded with laser-guided bombs and air-to-ground missiles. It is expected to be used in combat operations by the U.S. military in Afghanistan and Iraq within the next year.

The Zephyr is a lightweight, solar-powered plane built by British defence and security technology company QinetiQ. In addition to supporting defence and security requirements, it is being marketed as an ideal platform for a variety of civilian mapping, earth observation and atmospheric sensing applications. The aircraft uses a combination of solar array and rechargeable batteries and, when fully developed, is expected to operate for months at a time at an altitude above 50,000 feet.

A sentence in “Wrong fuel caused air crash?” (September 11, 2007) was: “The inquiry confirmed that the engines of the ill-fated aircraft ceased.” “Ceased” should have been “seized”.

In a hockey report “India steamrolls Korea to retain Asia Cup” (“Sport”, September 10, 2007), it was incorrectly mentioned in the strapline that Prabhojit and Baljit scored a brace each. It should have been Rajpal instead of Baljit who was the goalkeeper. In the same report, under the subheading “Malaysia finishes third”, the text said it was a 3-1 win for China, while the results column said 3-2. The results column is right.

In a football report “East Bengal shuts out JCT, in semifinals” (“Sport”, September 10, 2007), the goal scorer for JCT was said to be Parveen Kumar while the results gave it as Renedy Singh. The results column is right.

Pakistan drew with Malaysia 3-3 and had not lost as incorrectly mentioned in a hockey report “Umpire should know where he stands: [Kukoo] Walia” (“Sport”, September 10, 2007).

A PTI report “Nel to replace Bosman” (“Sport”, September 10, 2007) inadvertently missed out the name of Andre Nel in the team. The team is for the ICC World Twenty20 tournament in South Africa.
