Security up in Manipur tribal villages

IMPHAL: Security in tribal villages of Manipur, where tension is running high, had been beefed up.

Security forces were escorting buses carrying tribals in remote areas. The enhanced security follows fears of a backlash after the killing of 10 Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) militants by the NSCN(I-M) in Ukhrul district on September 3.

It is said that the NSCN(I-M) had invited the KLA militants at Tangkhul Hundung village for talks. Two days after the talks, the militants were killed and their weapons taken away.

In reply to demands from Kuki groups that the NSCN(I-M) give an explanation for the killings, the latter said the KLA was involved in the kidnapping of a German national and Victor Keishing, son of the Rajya Sabha member Rishang Keishing. To this, the KLA said the NSCN(I-M) was the one which was involved in kidnappings and extortions.
