Isuzu Motors to invest Rs. 300 crore To turn out 12,000 buses and trucks
ROPAR (CHANDIGARH): Swaraj Mazda rolled out luxury buses built on Isuzu chassis from its factory here on Tuesday at an impressive ceremony attended by Punjab Chief Secretary, Ramesh Inder Singh, Chairman of Isuzu Motors, Yoshinori Ida, and Chairman of Sumitomo Corporation, Motoyuki Oka. Later, addressing visiting newsmen, Managing Director, Swaraj Mazda, Yash Mahajan, said the company, manufacturer of light commercial vehicles (LCV), had taken a giant stride on Tuesday by moving into the “faster growing medium and heavy segments of the commercial vehicle industry.” Mr. Mahajan recalled that Swaraj Mazda was set up in 1983-85 as a joint venture between Sumitomo Corporation and Mazda Motor Corporation at a capital outlay of Rs. 32.50 crore for the manufacture of 5,000 light commercial vehicles. Over the years, it had expanded its capacity to 12,000 LCVs annually and the product portfolio consisted of five truck and five bus models besides special application vehicles. Isuzu Motors would invest Rs. 300 crore in the Swaraj Mazda facility in Punjab for manufacturing buses and trucks and in the first year itself 12,000 buses and trucks would be rolled out, he said. Mr. Mahajan said the year 2006 was a turning point for Swaraj Mazda as activities for setting up two state-of-the-art plants, one for producing Isuzu vehicles and the second one for manufacturing bus bodies were kicked off in August at the Ropar factory site. The total capital outlay of these two plants was estimated at Rs. 300 crore. While pointing out that the ultra luxury bus launched now is a 40-seater and fitted with a rear engine, he asserted that in the coming years, on the strength of its partnership with Isuzu, Swaraj Mazda would be able to offer large and medium size Isuzu buses and trucks to the operators.
