BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Hockey Association (KSHA) came down strongly on errant hockey players, handing out suspensions ranging from six months to five years for misbehaviour during the current season. For some time now, the KSHA has been trying to instil a sense of discipline, but players have been wayward and frequently scrapping with opponents and umpires. During a State ‘C’ division league match between Bangalore Friends Hockey Club and Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain College on August 18, violent scenes were witnessed. The tournament committee found Dayalan and Ronald Deepak guilty of misconduct and violence and the players have been suspended for five years with effect from August 18. Michael Bakes, also of Bangalore Friends HC, was suspended for two years, while Nandakumar and Ravikiran have been suspended till the end of the current season (March 31, 2008). In the ongoing super division league, Samson Fernandez of Madras Engineering Group & Centre was found guilty of misconduct and assaulting an umpire in the match played on September 3 against Sports Authority of India. Veteran Samson’s hockey career seems to have reached a roadblock with this punishment. The suspended players shall not be permitted to be associated with any hockey activities in any capacity during the period of suspension. — Special Correspondent
