Minister says children need to be disciplined without affecting their psyche
Bangalore: Gripped by the raging debate on whether corporal punishment should be banned in schools, the Government had decided to hold a seminar of experts on the issue in a bid to finalise its stand. Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti told presspersons in Bangalore on Tuesday that the seminar would be held after the elections to urban local bodies. The seminar would be attended by education experts, psychiatrists, teachers and parents. The Government would arrive at a stand on corporal punishment after eliciting the views of experts, the Minister said. He made it clear that he was against harsh physical punishment to children. But there was a need for some kind of punishment to discipline children. He expressed fear that preventing teachers from punishing children would encourage indiscipline among students. There was a need to evolve a method to discipline children without affecting their psyche. He hoped that the proposed seminar would help find such a solution.
