Tirupati
Special Correspondent
TIRUPATI: The State Government’s decision to enhance the property tax in all the Municipal Corporations in the State with effect from October 1 this year has evoked protest from a strange quarter. P. Naveen Kumar Reddy, the State Organising Secretary of the ‘Sevadal’-- the ‘Volunteers’ wing of the Congress party has in a letter to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy urged him to issue immediate instructions to the concerned to withdraw the GO as it was fraught with dangers of whipping up anti-congress sentiments which was not desirable at this stage. Mr. Reddy pointed out that if the hike was implemented as per the GO, as far as Tirupati is concerned it would mean enhancing the property tax twice in a gap of just six months because it was only in April this year that the tax was jacked up substantially in the name of removing a ceiling imposed on collecting it on the ‘plinth area basis’. Quick succession
Such a huge levy of tax in such a quick succession would be a huge burden especially on the non-residential category rate payers of Tirupati, he said. It would provide ammunition to the opposition to go after us and make us lose the ‘voters sympathy’, he said in his message.
