BERHAMPUR: Employees of Bhanjanagar Notified Area Council (NAC) of Ganjam district called off their 25-day-old strike on Tuesday. It was a great respite for the inhabitants of the township as it turned into a garbage dump due to the strike. The employees were on strike demanding revision of pay-scales. They called off their strike after the administration promised revision of pay-scales as per the recommendations of the fifth pay commission.According to Ashok Kumar Dalbehera, secretary of the Employees’ Association of Bhanjanagar NAC, their pay-scales were revised in 2002 and they had received salaries as per new pay-scale for 15 months. But, after that their pay- scale was reverted. Now, the NAC would have to pay more than Rs. 50 lakhs as dues to the employees. Worst sufferers
The citizens of Bhanjanagar were the worst sufferers in the tussle between the employees and the NAC authorities as the sanitary condition of the town had turned worse. On August 30, both BJD and Congress councillors joined hands to clean up some areas of the town. But their efforts were opposed by the striking employees. They resorted to road blockade against the effort. However, on August 6, the striking employees decided to clean up some major portions of the town as the deteriorating sanitary condition started to affect the health of inhabitants.
