BHUBANESWAR: A 10-month-old male baby elephant died after it fell into a deep well near Dampada village just outside the Chandaka-Dompada Sanctuary area on Sunday night. The sanctuary authorities retrieved the body on Monday and sent it for postmortem. "We have urged villagers to construct raised platform around their wells so that incident like this does not happen in future," Divisional Forest Officer of Sanctuary Akshaya Patnaik said. The baby elephant had strayed into human habitation in the night, he said. The death of the baby elephant was third pachyderm loss outside the sanctuary limit this year. While a baby elephant succumbed after failing to cope with its wild environment, a pet elephant died when it was administered tranqualizer recently.
