MYSORE: Representatives of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), consumers’ organisations, industrial and domestic electricity consumers confronted Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (CESC) over a proposal for revision of tariffs at a public hearing here Tuesday and appealed to the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) to order for reduction in tariffs as the corporation had failed to improve the power supply system despite support from the State Government. KERC Chairman K.P. Pandey gave a patient hearing to the grievances of the participants. The corporation drew criticism for its “failure” to reduce the distribution loss and the alleged manipulated figures in its audited balance sheets. “When the corporation gets a subsidy of Rs. 347 crore from the Government, why is it still making loss? Also, the cost of power supplied to it is less compared to other ESCOMs. Despite this, it is showing a revenue gap of Rs. 254 crore,” Satyanarayana Udupa, general secretary of Bharatiya Kisan Sangha, Udupi, said. Accusing the corporation of “manipulating data” in the audited balance sheets, Mr. Udupa said only 10 to 15 per cent of metering work had been done in the last couple of years.
