health hazard: A dumper bin is left open near AVN College Down resulting in garbage spilling on to the road and creating problems to passers-by.
VISAKHAPATNAM: Garbage collection, transportation and disposal are tasks that workers of the municipal corporation do every day. But in several localities the lifting is not done regularly. As a result, the bins overflow. Residents throwing garbage into the bin from a distance adds to the problem. The bins are supposed to remain closed and opened only at the time dumping the garbage at the yard. However, the door of the bin near AVN College Down is kept open. “It has always been kept open causing inconvenience to everyone passing by and those living or doing business here,” says Devi, a shop keeper nearby. The situation is no different at the nearby Sunnapuveedhi where the bin is the favourite haunt of stray dogs for leftovers. They also are a threat to pedestrians and others at night. The dumper bins appear without doors at many places. The hinges are removed and sold by miscreants. “That’s a big problem in the maintenance of the bins and keeping garbage in them,” admits an official of the Municipal Corporation. Also there are not enough bins to replace them as soon as possible. At several places, the bins are rusty and are in bad shape. Until the corporation acquires more bins, the problem is likely to persist. The doors also must be kept closed. But the workers who collect garbage keep the doors open so as to push the tricycles directly into them for emptying. “That needs a better supervision,” says the official.
