KOCHI: The turbidity (the condition that makes water muddy) level in Periyar came down on Tuesday after it shot up considerably on Monday, triggering fears that the water supply system might be affected in the Kochi region. The quality control wing of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) started monitoring water quality on a regular basis from Tuesday morning. Turbidity rose to 65 ntu (nephelometric turbidity units) on Monday afternoon. “It (turbidity) usually goes up during rainy days. But it came down by Tuesday morning,” said Jolly Mathew, executive engineer of the wing. Tests conducted at the quality-monitoring laboratory of the KWA found fluctuating turbidity levels on Monday. The turbidity level was around 56 ntu in the afternoon. It came down to 35 ntu by 5.30 p.m. On Tuesday, the levels came down alleviating fears that the water supply system from Aluva might be affected following the increase in turbidity levels. Turbidity was 23 ntu in the morning. It came down to 15 ntu by afternoon. Turbidity level was less than 5 ntu after treatment. The head works section of the KWA in Aluva has taken steps to maintain the quality of the water supplied from the pump house there. Officials said that lime and alum will be deposited in the water, as part of maintaining the quality.
