BANGALORE: The Indian Government must frame a separate policy on genetically modified organisms (GMO) to regulate the field of biotechnology, said P.G. Chengappa, Vice-Chancellor of University of Agricultural Sciences on Monday.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the public colloquium on “The march of Agricultural Biotechnology in India”, organised by the Foundation for Biotechnology Awareness and Education (FBAE), he said the lack of a concrete policy had left the players in the field uncertain about working with transgenic material.
Mr. Chengappa said that in Karnataka, drought tolerant varieties of genetically modified crops were needed as the State is one of the most dry regions in the country.
Biotech applications we important to deal with nutrient deficiency in the soil, he said.
S. Shantaram of FBAE said that most biotech colleges in the city did not have skilled or knowledgeable faculty.
