Call to channelise energy of youth

Staff Reporter

Chennai: The energy, vitality and vigour that Indian youth possess must be channelised for the progress of the country, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said here on Tuesday.

“Colleges and universities should dedicate themselves to the empowerment of youth through quality education,” Mr. Barnala said, at the valedictory of the diamond jubilee celebrations of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College.

The Governor urged educational institutions to instil self-confidence and the spirit of creative thinking in students.

He said Swami Vivekananda had reposed great faith in the ability of youth.

A diamond jubilee souvenir was released by Mr. Barnala, who presented the first copy to V. Ratnam, former Governor of Himachal Pradesh and an alumnus of the college.

Ramakrishna Mission (New Delhi) secretary Shantatmananda said the spirit of ‘seva’ (voluntary service) would propel India’s progress. The country might be growing fast but the economic divide was growing wider. More people need to come forth to serve society, he said.

Neyveli Lignite Corporation chairman and managing director S. Jayaraman and Bank of Baroda executive director V. Santhanaraman, both alumni of the college, and Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith vice president Nalli Kuppuswamy participated in the programme.
