CHENNAI: The State Government is contemplating increasing student enrolment in arts and science colleges, according to Higher Education Minster K. Ponmudy. “We will try and ensure that student intake in government arts and science colleges is doubled from next year. We are confident of achieving this, given the response to the shift system introduced in some institutions,” he said, participating in a function to celebrate the grant of autonomy to Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College. The Government will also fill up 2,000 vacant teacher posts in government colleges within a month, he said. The filling of vacancies would result in a uniform delivery system, whereby both the quality and quantity of teaching in government colleges would be enhanced. The Minister also promised government help for starting three postgraduate programmes in Dr. Ambedkar College — M.Sc (Information Technology), M.A (English) and B.B.A, from the next academic year. Additions to syllabus
The granting of autonomy status last year had helped the college improve its education delivery mechanism, principal R. Mathialagan said. The college had since constituted its own Board of Studies and restructured its syllabus, especially in English and Commerce. Communication and spoken English were added to the syllabus. “Shift system a success”
The shift system was successful as there were no vacancies either in the day or evening colleges. The college was contemplating a series of measures for more curriculum reform. Perambur MLA K. Mahendran announced a grant of Rs.7 lakh for setting up a basketball court in the college. Later, Mr. Ponmudy inaugurated an audio-visual lab in the college and distributed free bus passes to students.
