NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation has sought confirmation, from Interpol and Thailand, on reports of the detention of Kumaran Pathmanathan alias KP, believed to be one of the close associates of LTTE supremo V. Prabakaran. KP figured as one of the 14 accused in the “Tong Nova” case, registered at the M-1 Harbour police station in Chennai in 1991, of smuggling of explosives, arms and ammunitions into India. He was declared an absconder in the case.
CBI Director Vijay Shanker told The Hindu on Tuesday that KP was also a subject of investigation by the Special Investigation Team, which probed the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. There were references to him and his role in the Jain Commission report on the conspiracy aspects of the assassination. There were indications of KP having participated in some way or the other in the preparation for the assassination, Mr. Shanker said. The CBI got an Interpol Red Corner Notice issued against KP, believed to be a big operator and fund-raiser for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in foreign countries. Mr. Shanker said the CBI also asked the Indian mission in Bangkok to furnish details and confirmation of KP’s detention. The LTTE operative was believed to be in possession of a number of passports and had used several identities to dodge law enforcement agencies.
