Green pioneer dead

Hasan Suroor

Anita Roddick

LONDON: Anita Roddick, who championed green and ethical causes long before they became fashionable and founded the Body Shop, one of the world’s most famous stores for animal-free beauty products, died on Monday at the age of 64 after suffering brain haemorrhage. She is survived by her husband, Gordon, and two daughters. All three were by her side when she died at St Richard’s Hospital in Chicester where she was admitted on Sunday after complaining of headache. On Tuesday, as tributes poured in, Prime Minister Gordon Brown described her as one of the country’s “true pioneers”. He said she “inspired” millions to embrace green issues by bringing sustainable products to a mass market. “She will be remembered not only as a great campaigner but also as a great entrepreneur,” he said. Around the world, women will remember Dame Anita for introducing a range of safe and animal fat-free beauty products through the Body Shop stores, the first of which she set up in Brighton in 1976 starting a trend in fair and ethical trade. What started off as a cause grew into a multi-million pound business. She had special affection for Africa and sourced products from there.
