New Delhi: The Indian challenge in the singles event of the China Open tennis tournament ended on Tuesday with Rohan Bopanna retiring midway though his first round match against seventh seed Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Bopanna, who entered the main draw after playing the qualifiers, was trailing 3-6, 0-1 when he called it quits. The Davis Cupper dropped his serve twice in the first set and eventually conceded the tie after spending 52 minutes on the court. “I hurt my rib in the last game of the first set, while hitting a kick serve,” said Bopanna. It was a setback for the 27-year-old Bopanna after he had done so well to win three rounds in the qualifying event to make the main draw. More importantly, Bopanna had tied up with Mahesh Bhupathi for the doubles event, and the Indian duo had been seeded No.1. “Our doubles is scheduled for Thursday. So, we will see how it is in the morning and get it checked up further before taking any decision,” said Bopanna. The results (first round): At Beijing: ATP China Open: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga bt Rohan Bopanna 6-3, 1-0 (retd.); Viktor Troicki (Serbia) bt Teimuraz Gabashvili 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4; Boris Pasanski bt Lu Yen-Hsun 6-7(4), 6-2, 7-6(6); Ivan Ljubi cic bt Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-4; Rik De Voest bt Jun Woong-Sun 6-4, 7-6(4); Nicolas Kiefer bt Dudi Sela 6-2, 6-3; Marin Cilic bt Rainer Schuettler 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3.
