Basketball
HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh men posted a facile 80-59 win over Puducherry in the opening match of the South Zone basketball championships that got underway at the Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium here on Tuesday. At half-time, the winner led 56-31. On the distaff side, it was cakewalk for Kerala as it crushed Puducherry 72-22 after leading 42-13 half-way through. Led from the front by skipper J. Pankaj, the home side broke some sweat during the first quarter when it encountered resistance from the Puducherry players. Pankaj, an international who also played in the World Railway Games, set the pace, lobbing in a three-pointer now or by directing precision passes to his forward line. Slam dunk
Off one such offering, the wiry I.B.P.Ch. Kumar Varma had all the time in the world to grab the ring and slam dunk. The host’s starting five preferred to rest on the bench after the first-half, the second string keeping up the good work. While Andhra Pradesh kept enhancing its tally, Puducherry’s score was sluggish if not stagnant at times. The Kerala women toyed with their counterparts from Puducherry, the former’s taller line-up rarely giving room to their small-built rivals to make much of an impact. Earlier, the championship was declared open by L. Venkatram Reddy, Secretary, Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association. The results: Men: Andhra Pradesh 80 (I.B.P.Ch. Kumar Varma 15, J. Pankaj17, B. Satyanarayana 12) bt Puducherry 59 (Hari Krishnan 22, Kumaran 13, Manikandan10). Women: Kerala 72 (Litty Mathew 16, Sonia Joseph 14, Smitha Sasi 8) bt Puducherry 22 (P. Sasikala 7). — Special Correspondent
