Kursura is fantastic, says US navy official

Staff Reporter

She wants one such submarine museum in her country as well

VISAKHAPATNAM: Carol M Pottinger of the US Navy on Wednesday visited submarine museum Kursura on the Ramakrishna Beach here and described it as a fantastic experience.

She was inside the submarine for nearly half an hour accompanied by an Eastern Naval Command official and enquired about the details and efforts in setting it up.

Read Admiral Pottinger said the museum was remarkable and praised the dedication that went into its setting up.

“It’s a proud moment for the Indian Navy,” she said. Answering a question, she said there was nothing of the kind in the US.

“What we have in the US are the Second World war subs. But this is quite well preserved and supported by the government,” she said.

On whether she would make any proposals for setting up such a museum, she said she would have to go back and make one.

“What a fantastic experience.

The Indian Navy should be very proud of this awesome display,” she wrote in the Visitors’ Book.

Stating that she was in India for the first time, she said she liked spending time with the Navy counterparts here during the Indo-US joint exercises in the Bay of Bengal.

However, Rear Admiral Pottinger did not take questions on the exercise.

The 2,468-ton Russian submarine was decommissioned in 2001.

The Navy engaged the services of the NSDRC to haul up the submarine on to the Beach.

The Navy handed over the maintenance of the submarine museum to the VUDA.
