Government lost collective responsibility: Natesan

Staff Reporter

SNDP to celebrate Natesan’s 70th birthday

SNDP does not rule out possibility of talks with PDP

Proclamation meeting on Saturday

ALAPPUZHA: Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan said here on Wednesday that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government in the State had lost its “sense of collective responsibility,” which, in turn, was affecting the Government’s performance.

Addressing a ‘Meet the Press’ programme at the Alappuzha Press Club, Mr. Natesan said a major drawback of the LDF was that “deities that were bigger than the temple itself” were controlling the Government. “The Government could function properly only if these deities were shown their right place,” he said.

Reacting to a resolution that was passed by the Alappuzha District Congress Committee against the participation of Union Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar in a proclamation meeting in connection with Mr. Natesan’s 70th birthday on September 15, the Yogam general secretary said he would not be deterred by such “acts of jealousy.”

Mr. Natesan, who did not rule out the possibility of the Yogam holding talks with People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Nasir Maudany in the context of what he called “a change in Maudany’s approach,” also said that he would work with renewed vigour towards bringing together Hindu communities in the State.

SNDP Yogam workers have decided to launch year-long celebrations in connection with Mr. Natesan’s 70th birthday.

Programmes

A host of welfare schemes and programmes have been lined up, all named after Mr. Natesan, who celebrated his birthday here on Monday. While 70 meetings that will aim at spreading the message of Sree Narayana Guru will be held in India and abroad, the Yogam will adopt 70 students to help them complete higher studies. Each SNDP Union will also select 70 students each to provide educational scholarships, Yogam leaders said here.

The other major initiatives being launched during the proclamation meeting on September 15 include construction of 700 houses for the poor, a micro-finance scheme costing Rs.700 crore to ensure jobs for unemployed women and a Rs. 300-crore project with the help of banks to uplift the agriculture sector.

The Yogam would also set up a Sree Narayana Research Centre based in Kollam to train SNDP Union leaders in organisational matters, celebration welcome committee chairman M.B. Sreekumar told reporters.

The proclamation meeting from 10 a.m. at Kanichukulangara on September 15 will be inaugurated by Union Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar while Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac will present the keys for the Sapthathi Smaraka Bhavan. Padmashree P. Parameswaran will launch a new web site dedicated to the SNDP leader while the former Union Minister S. Krishnakumar will unveil a wax statue of Mr. Natesan.
