An unexpected pattern emerges in Belgaum

Staff Correspondent

BJP, JD(S) and Congress join

hands against

MES for civic polls

Belgaum: Leaders of the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (Secular) have yielded to pressure from Kannada organisations and decided to join hands against the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi (MES) in the elections to 58-member Belgaum City Corporation.

At a meeting of leaders of the three parties and Kannada organisations represented by the Belgaum District Kannada Organisations Action Committee (BDKOAC) here on Wednesday,

a committee was formed under the leadership of Shashikant A. Naik (BJP) who is Minister for Horticulture and district in-charge. Congress MLA from the city Ramesh Kudachi and Belgaum District Janata Dal (Secular) president Ashok Pujari are the other members of the committee.

However, the understanding is limited to Belgaum City Corporation.

Later, BDKOAC president Ashok Chandargi told presspersons that although the BJP had left the decision to join hands with other parties to local leaders, Mr. Naik and other leaders in the party had decided to join hands with both Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) to protect the interests of Kannada and Karnataka and put up a united fight against the pro-Maharashtra MES.

The development had come as a great relief to Kannada organisations, which would play a catalytic role in selecting good candidates from various sections of society. Seat sharing among the three parties would be decided shortly, he said.

Mr. Chandargi said that it was for the first time that all the political parties in the city had joined hands with Kannada organisations for a common cause.
