Test run: Speed trial of Salem - Viridhachalam section on Wednesday.— SALEM: Commissioner of Railway Safety (Southern Circle), K.J.S Naidu, and Railway officials conducted speed trial using a special train between Salem and Viridhachalam on Wednesday. The Commissioner along with Southern Railway Chief Administrative Officer R. Ramanathan and senior officials assessed the condition of the newly-laid broad gauge rail track in the section. Later talking to reporter, the Commissioner said the exercise was carried out properly. He said that the trial run was conducted at a maximum speed of 120 kmph. However, at a few points, the train was operated at a speed of 80 to 90 kmph. Mr. Ramanathan said that a report would be submitted to the Railway Ministry shortly. The train which started at the Viridhachalam station at 11.30 a.m. arrived at the Salem Market Station at 12.45 p.m. Mr. Naidu presented cash rewards to the loco operators, guards and traffic inspector. Earlier, the Commissioner inspected the facilities at the railway stations and the rail tracks in the Salem - Attur section on September 10 and 11. Officials said the Salem-Viridhachalam gauge conversion project was taken up at a cost of Rs. 260 crore. Trains could be operated to Chennai, Bangalore, Tiruchi and Madurai through this section, they added. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited Chief Project Manager Pradeep Gaur, Tiruchi Divisional Railway Manager Ram Chandra Jat and senior officials were present.
