ANANTAPUR: Breath-analysers introduced by the district police to check drunken driving about two-and-half months back in all towns and on the highways are having a positive impact. The police have noticed a gradual decline in the cases of drunken driving since the introduction of the equipment. Impact of the equipment was also noticed in increased awareness among the drivers against drunken driving and its possible fatal consequences. When contacted, Traffic Inspector of Police M. Nagasubbanna told The Hindu that the equipment was introduced on June 30 this year and 159 drunken driving cases were registered so far, after vehicle drivers tested positive during the breath checking. Of the 159 cases registered, only 60 drivers were license holders, exposing another significant fact that a majority of the drivers were unlicensed. On producing in the court, the offenders of drunken driving were fined Rs. 800 and Rs. 1,100 each for holding -and not holding driving license, respectively.
