HYDERABAD: The continuous heavy rain may have augured well for plain areas in rest of the State, but this bountiful of showers resulting in flooding of Vamsadhara river in Vizianagaram district has placed Forest Department officials in a piquant situation, as they are unable to drive away elephants from Orissa that strayed into the State.
A herd of elephants from Laksheri sanctuary in Orissa that came to the State last month is unable to return as the river is in spate. Though 11 adults in the herd could cross the river, they had to return as two male calves among them were unable to venture into the swirling waters. The officials are now left with no option but to ensure that they are fed properly till the floodwater recedes so that they do not enter agricultural fields and damage crops. The pachyderms can now feast on sugarcane and other favourite items, as officials have made elaborate equate arrangements for them.
The herd caused considerable damage to crops in Addamguda, Murada and other villages of Gummalaxmipuram mandal of Vizianagaram district.
