dated September 13, 1957: Detention of Abdullah

Prime Minister Nehru, addressing a National Conference meeting in Jammu on September 11, referred to Sheikh Abdullah’s arrest and said: “I cannot say this step was wrong but since he was our companion for years and had earned a name for himself in the freedom struggle of India, his arrest had deeply pained me.” He said he still did not know what had caused Sheikh Abdullah to “part company with me.” The Prime Minister said he was convinced that the way Sheikh Abdullah was going then was a dangerous way and was harming the interest of Kashmir and the whole of India and the arrest had therefore been correct. He explained that he had not visited the State all these years because he had been pained and hurt by the arrest and detention of Sheikh Abdullah.
