dated September 13, 1957: TTK on betting

The Finance Minister, Mr. T.T. Krishnamachari, told the Rajya Sabha on September 11 that he had heard of bets being made in Bombay on the state of his health. Rejecting suggestions of members that gambling and racing should be dealt with through the Expenditure Tax Bill, he said that if betting on one item was prevented people would start betting on something else. “They might even bet on the Finance Minister. In Bombay oftentimes reports are circulated that I am very ill or on the point of dying and the market shares go up,” he added.
