Held to ransom

This refers to the editorial “Held to ransom” (Sept. 12). We opted for a representative democracy in the hope that our representatives would work on our behalf towards establishing an egalitarian society. Politicians, who indulge in mudslinging, create a din, and walk out of Parliament, do not realise that they are playing with the people’s expectations. With the legislature increasingly failing to do its duty, the judiciary is making laws by entertaining as many public interest litigation petitions as possible.

Priyanka Jha,
New Delhi

The highest public forum in the country adjourned sine die four days ahead of the scheduled end of the monsoon session without discussing crucial issues that affect the nation. Such waste of time and money undermines the importance of the great institution called Parliament.

Mahabubnagar

Repeated disruptions caused by the BJP-led opposition parties are unfortunate. The BJP’s obduracy on a JPC on the India-U.S. nuclear deal is uncalled for. If the BJP is really concerned about the impact of the deal, it should have called for a debate in the house. The opposition must appreciate that nothing can be achieved by creating a fracas.

B. Jayanna Krupakar,
Surathkal

The BJP once again failed to act as a responsible opposition. The party should evolve better strategies to make the government pay attention to its views. Stalling the proceedings of the house is no way to drive home a point. It should stop indulging in such gimmicks and take up the people’s issues seriously.

S. Prince Ezrah,
New Delhi
