Sharif’s deportation

The temporary relief Pervez Musharraf got by deporting the former Pakistan Prime Minster, Nawaz Sharif, to Saudi Arabia may not last long. A bigger revolt against him is brewing. The legal fraternity and the opposition are preparing for a long-drawn war to oust him. The Supreme Court may intervene effectively to get Mr. Sharif to return and contest the general election; martial law may be imposed for a short period; or another powerful military general may stage a coup ousting Gen. Musharraf, promising democracy in a phased manner.

The drama that took place in Islamabad on Monday has illustrated once again who Gen. Musharraf is — a dictator to the core. Mr. Sharif’s arrest and deportation will add to the piling resentment against him in Pakistan.

The political drama in Pakistan has once again pitted Gen. Musharraf against the judiciary. He cannot continue to function with the people’s resentment for him and the military rule increasing. The PPP’s plan to share power with the General has eroded its image.

The PPP’s clarification (Sept. 10) made amusing reading. One does not negotiate with a military general to pave the way for democracy, that too, sitting in a distant land. Nothing that Gen. Musharraf has done in the past several years suggests that he is serious about restoring democracy in Pakistan. All his moves were calculated to tighten his stranglehold on the country. He did not spare even the judiciary. Dictators are forced out either by another military coup or by intense political pressure, coupled with the active involvement of the masses.
